The Master (2012)
Paul Thomas Anderson

The character Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) throughout the film is in search of female companionship. A specific scene in the film illustrates this yearning desire. Symbolized when Freddie attempts to steal an ornament of a woman, however he finds it doesn’t fit in any of his pockets - deciding to leave it behind.

This is a reflection of the flashback sequence later in the film where we see Freddie leaving his love, Doris Solstad (Madisen Beaty). The ornament represents Doris, the lady he has left behind, a haunting memory that troubles Freddie throughout the film.
